We plagiarize everyday like detectives catch criminals
The truth of a writer is that we are creative activists that find new ways to cover old ideas. However, we writers tend to accidentally plagiarize when we see a particularly great sentence written in a book. I know I have a little notebook of fantastically woven lyrics, or word phrases that were strung together. You aren’t a writer if you haven’t picked up a book and found at least one beautiful sentence in it. We are the imagination roots in our world. We pluck the beauty out of everything.
What are writers but idea thieves with a twisted mind? Granted there are a few of us who can spill out an original idea but most original ideas have some weeds from older works. One of my favorite stories is an original idea such as Harry Potter. I think what makes J,K Rowlings story so popular is that it is a world that people believe is not copied but her work was based on the bible. I can see the resemblance in that but the work is written so well that we can hardly see the writer’s influences for it. However, my second favorite book series is Cassandra clare’s Mortal instruments. Maybe I am a bit of an eccentric but I can see the Romeo and Juliet inspiration bleeding out of her pages.
The thing about plagiarism is that it is only plagiarism when you use someone else’s words without permission or is a clear copy of it. I like to say writers are creative plagiarists as we never copy someone else’s work but use it for inspiration like a drummer uses generic beats. I can go on and on about proper citing but all you really have to is quote and put the writer’s name down if you're taking a word for word section from someone else.
“All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking.” Friedrich Nietzsche
We writers appreciate one another because a world so focused on technology leaves us yearning to make a mark. We are heathens in the world creating ideas, and thoughts out of thin air like artists of the unknown. I will say this if a writer says “ this idea has already been done before.” they are inadvertently setting up for failure because what the writer wants to create can only be done by them.
I think our world thrives off of creative thieves. I mean look at our movies, and television shows. Most of our movies are ideas replicated from a book, or someone’s own creative twist on an old idea. If you really think about 90% of what we watch is taken from someone else with a creative twist. For instance, the new exorcist show is a direct relation to the old movie, or even the show Bates Motel which is a direct connection to the movie.
In my own way, I even take inspiration from other’s work but I don’t like to take people's ideas word for word. I like to be a creative linguist who can transform ideas into a painted picture.
