Beyond that place – chapter four
Dan had spent the entire work week slaving over the elf. Men and Women who should've spent the week in jail got out within hours of being detained due to his need to uncover how the elf just disappeared like Dobby from Harry Potter as he was finding out from reading the novel. Her name was still a mystery to him but the very idea that all that humanity knows might be wrong drove him to keep researching. Neamrian elves were like humans with whiter skin, weird hair, and sharp ears. Their teeth were like a cat.
His ex wife was still trying to wheedle her way into his imaginary court case so to speak. She sent him texts that his daughter would love to read the insanity that her father has become. He wiped a trickle of sweat off his forehead hoping that he really wasn’t seeing illusions with his officers. Jessie had rounded up the rookies to sit in the conference room to await their orders. The facade for a missing case file he had was meant to just entertain his officers for a bit, and teach him a little more about elves.
The pile of papers on his desk had so much red tape that if the state police walked in they would probably count him as crazy, and sweep him to the looney bin on sight. His hands swept the papers up before getting up to head for the conference room. It was time to play off the elf as a joke for now. He bet he’d never see her face again, but knowing magic existed...could just make him a bit of a lunatic.
Whispers in the conference room were about the latest office scandal between Jessie and Dan. Bets were on the table on who would uncover the facts behind who fell for who first, The door slammed opened and he meandered in nearly spilling his coffee cup, and throwing all the papers everywhere. It was average for him to be the clumsy chief in standing. “ Alright, I heard that little bit about Jessie. Your lucky I don’t fire you rookies. I mean some of you have tasted her too.”
“ Oh come on, We can’t have a little fun with our fiery lieutenant from time to time?” An officer waved his hand humorously trying to show the size of Jessie’s buttox.
“ I think she may have a bigger one than that Zac. But enough of your bets. I’m going to put you guys to test on those movies, and fantasy shit that you’ve read since you were eight.”
“ Does Game of Thrones count? I really like Khaleesi.”
“ No David. Dragons still don’t exist as far as I’m concerned. Anyways,” Dan started dishing out flyers to the seven participants in his experiment who each had a different type of elf on the flyer. “ Today we playing uncover which elf did the crime which sounds lame now that I say it.”
“ Haha, You are giving us an easy test. Where was the serial killer idea you had a month ago go?“
“ I felt like using my creativity this time around. So,I want each of you to read up what I have on each elf, and the world they live in. After that I want you to look up what type of crime you think each one would commit and apply it to a recent crime. Once we have dictated the types of elves and magic we have we can then apply which elf could be a serial killer, and why. The person who gives me the best result will get a promotion...to daily donut eater.” Everyone in the room laughed at the words but he was just making them re-read all of his research and obtain a better understanding of that she-elf. “ You have a week to deliver me your findings, and then I will bring you the next task for this test.”
Dan went back to his office to finish real paperwork before heading home. He made his way home unaware of what he would find walking into his home. His driveway was lit up by the lamps that turned on with motion which all lit up as the car drove up the driveway. The air fogged up his window from the difference of heat, and as he shut it off he felt a shiver down his spine.
His hands went to twist the wooden knob open but the door was already ajar which made him go right into officer mode but without a gun. He had his back against the door taking peeks around the corner to cheek who would've broken in.
On inspection, the door did not look tinkered with, and the key hole in the knob didn’t look tampered with. His ex wife would be the only one with a key to enter without telling him but something was odd. She would standing in the kitchen with her arms folded trying to hide his pretty daughter.
No one would notice the paper thrown everywhere in the hallway like someone was trying to get into his work related stuff. But that paperwork was in his room. He ran up the velvet carpet stairs desperately heaving with each step in panic. Who would just waltz into a locked house?
“It’s not here Aorian. “ A woman's voice which was familiar to his ears spoke. Ahh...it was her.
“ You mean to say the little elf managed to get here, and you couldn’t secure her and bring her to area fifty one?” A man spoke his words fluent but with a slight Irish accent. What was his ex doing with an Irish man?
“ I mean to say, my ex found her and she disappeared by magic away. If people knew what we were really up to in area fifty one they would be wondering how some of the magic leaked to certain writers. But if you are saying she didn’t have enough time to leave a trail back then we will have to find a new way to Sumaria..”
“ Honey, why did you break into my house with my own key and ransack my papers?”
“ If you would have done your job correctly and detained the elf I wouldn’t have to resort to trying to find out how she disappeared.”
“ Let’s get out of here.” Aorian said the words as he dodged a foot to the knee from Dan.
“No, you're going to explain this.”He grabbed Aorian from the shirt and threw back into the bedroom as he stepped forward and shut his bedroom door. “ Alright snake, tell me what you know about that elf, and explain to me what you’ve been lying about.”
However, his ex wife waved her hand to make her and the other man disappear as if she was a witch. Written on the wall were the words “ Better luck next time love.”
